Proverbially there is no rest for the wicked, and it would appear that debaters are steeped in wickedness: having returned from Worlds, swooshed (more or less)* through exams and the odd Schools Mace Round, “Team St Andrews” is now in Trinity College Dublin.
My red bedside telephone rang at 3am (OK, I was texted at 21.17, do you want banality?) and it was reported that James (deinos legein) and Duncan (summus magister philosophiae) had fared particularly well. Ed conveyed, in beautifully understated textspeak, (the demotic of the wielders of the Far-Speaking Devices) that they had made it “thru quarters, thru semis 2 FINAL.”
I’m happy to deem Ed a ‘reliable source,’ so assuming this is not a Kafkaesque ripple of unreality (it is eternity am, and I could be dreaming), I declare today a day of feasting and rejoicing (under the emergency powers section of the Constitution; I think it’s VIII.III-I must ask John Yoo).
This is glorious news, and they deserve it. YAY! I hope the freshers enjoyed this prince among IVs.(I’m sorry, I’m imagining a huge saline drip now.) This should only have enhanced the awesomeness of the experience for them, and I’m sure James and Duncan were grateful for the support and debateslove.
Safe journey home (and send more news!),
Owen
*Some of us did not swish or sashay through exams. Some of us slammed with great and unrelenting force into the iron-grey seas, and sank to the bottom. But there is always hope. 😉
Oh Owen. You make me want to go to tournaments just so you can report on them…
As well as the exploits of team Tupac, we also had two other teams narrowly miss the break, with Jack and Ed finishing on 10 but without the speaks to break. Myself and Miles had the speaks but had to avoid a last from 1st prop in our final debate, which we failed to do. However Miles should be congratulated for a stellar performance on the speaker tab as he finished 12th.
Good showing all round chaps and especially to our freshers who acquitted themselves well at their first foreign IV. If anyone feels a desperate need for the tab, I have a paper copy with me but won’t be back until the 6th. The soft copy should be on the web soon.
TUPAC LIVES!!
